Things I Miss About the UK

Hmm...so what do I miss (after friends, family, yadda yadda yadda)?
  • My cleaners, above and beyond everything else;
  • British magazines. US magazines require more flicking through random ads than my concentration will allow;
  • My fashion sense evidently, since arriving in California (ha! dead giveaway!) I have purchased (i) a tracksuit (ii) crochet UGG boots. (Slight tangent here, the worst thing about the boots is that they were bought on a recommendation from the annual Oprah's Favourite Things programme).
  • Waitrose. Contrary to the charming and completely stereotype-conforming Americans I overheard in Heathrow complaining about British food, American food, or should I say American groceries are totally and utterly inferior to their British equivalents. Grocery shopping now takes twice as long as in the UK, not only because the supermarkets are so vast in order to make room for all the vile processed rubbish (toaster streudel anyone?), but because you have to read EVERY label to ensure the item in question has no high fructose corn syrup and/or antibiotics, because believe me if it doesn't say it's free of these grim additives, it isn't.
  • Topshop, M&S etc. I think this must just be homesickness/nostalgia as some of the US high street stores (Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters et al) are pretty cool. Here is where articulate description of why US stores are just not as good as their British counterparts is failing to make itself known to me. Perhaps it's because the US doesn't really have any high streets? I've been told that Forever 21 is worth a look and I did try, really I did, but it just seemed like a sub-par New Look;
  • Pubs. I didn't realise that I did until I briefly entered one in Palo Alto, last Thursday. Unfortunately there were no seats (comfortingly familiar scenario though) so I will have to miss it for a bit longer...
Things I do not miss (hopefully self-explanatory)
  • Work. I keep trying to devise a cunning scheme to avoid going back. So far, not going to happen.
  • The tube. (As above).

hi Britgirl - that's so funny - of course you don't miss the Tube, but I hadn't thought about missing Waitrose! What about Boots?! I'm new here by the way, so wondering how you ended up in California - lucky you - the profile link seems to just link to blog posts?
